Hi everyone!
I am so excited to be here as a first time chicken owner. I have been doing lots of reading but cannot wait to glean all the information I can from everyone here.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes! I am new to chickens. Tractor Supply had their Chick Days and I fell for the chicks. My husband grew up on 40 acres and his mom had chickens so he said we could get them since he has some experience with them and he adores farm fresh eggs. I am not an egg person but when I visited my mother-in-law for the first time, she made me eggs from her chickens and they were a gorgeous golden color and so flavorful. So I am looking forward to that as well.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 8 chickens. Tractor Supply has you buy them in groups of 4 so we got our first four. I went back two weeks later (not for chicks) and Ended up with 4 more.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Barred Rock: Tapioca
Rhode Island Red: Niblet
Buff Orpington: Buffy
Golden Laced Wyandotte: Kuli
Golden Sex Linked (?): Mercy
Welsummer (?): Huli
Light Brahma: Delta
Unknown: Chick
I have 3 questionable breeds because the Tractor Supply had chicks mislabeled and then couldn’t tell me what they actually were when I asked. If there is a thread for pictures and asking what breed they are, I will do that next!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I was doing a google search on whether I should keep my chickens on a preventive routine for coccidiosis because I also have Labrador Retrievers that I show and breed. They share the same back yard as I do have a coop for my chickens, but they free roam every day.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I show and breed Labrador Retrievers. I like to read and research various subjects. I also like fishing and just being outdoors. Animals and nature have always been relaxing to me.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My human family consists of six people. My husband, myself, and our four children ages 14, 13, 10, and 8.
I have three Labrador Retrievers: Noel (yellow & 7 years), Bailey (chocolate & 2 years), and Jovie (yellow and 1 year). I also have an English a bulldog named Roxy who is 10 weeks old. Last, but not least, I have a rescue cat named Harley Quinn and her name suits her, lol!
