Tonight the Kinder Major and I candled the thirty five White Midget turkey eggs we set back in the evening of the 23rd so they've been in there eleven days now. I have to admit I was trepidatious about this as it's our first time incubating eggs. To our astonishment it looks like every single one of them is developing!
Now we have some candling experience, but it is limited to grading eggs not candling for incubation so it could be we misinterpreted some of what we saw, but it sure looked like every single one of them was growing.
We also candled the twelve White Leghorn and twelve Easter Egger eggs we set last Tuesday so they'd hatch (in theory at least) when the turkeys do. It's only been five days for them so there hasn't been a lot of time for them to grow yet. Looked to me like one clear for the Leghorns with the other eleven developing. The Easter Eggers, of course, are hard to candle, especially this early on so although we had the impression that they were all developing it's really too soon to say. We'll candle the chicken eggs again next weekend when we should be able to tell better what we're looking at. From reading what some of the more experienced turkey folks say we won't candle those eggs again until the twenty fifth day.
So far, so very good. We seem to be getting very good growth.
Projected hatch date is April 20th. I'm trying very hard not to count our chickens (and turkeys!) before they hatch. Not sure if I'm going to make it or not. This is worse than waiting for seeds to sprout!
