I suspect you were using vertical nipples in your nipple attempt? Try horizontal ones, much, much less dripping and they are not prone to leaking...

No wet bedding in my current brooder...

I haven't seen those nipples.... Very intrigued for the future coop waterer! We set up the kiddie pool with sand, small waterer/feeder, etc in the basement and all seems to be well. At least the pool is plastic and less likely to harbor moisture than our plywood brooder. Everyone seems sick of moving but otherwise content

Interesting....I think we have moved beyond the brooder, provided they don't find a way to completely destroy the pool But, this is a great idea for the run waterer that we were planning to build. Seems much more practical than the vertical nipples, for sure. They work but there is a ton of waste. Thanks for the info, I'll definitely be buying some of these.

It should work fine for the young ones, but never underestimate grown birds... I use kiddie pools for dust baths in the coop and I don't know if it's the chickens or the guinea fowl but someone has pecked the pool so hard they punched a bunch of little pin hole dents all over the sides of the pool..

I just order some horizontal nipples.

In the meantime...if this helps anyone....I went to the hardware store to see what I could fashion that would be harder to knock over. Found the hummingbird feeders, bought one for 6.00 and took the lid (the part with the flowers painted on) off...it works like a charm! Put a dowel across the top of the tub, some string and it takes up very little space. And it stays clean. The top is sloped so they can't roost on there...it's absolutely wonderful!

I will use the horizontal nipples in their "real" coop...

The horizontal nipples are nothing short of amazing! I got them yesterday, installed 4 on a 5 gallon bucket and set it in the brooder. They've got it figured out and the sand underneath them is 100% dry. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll move the 5 gallon bucket into the run once they move into the big girl house
