So I got a hen for my Peacock....

I love his name!! Ane he's gorgeous!! He will display for her but may just take his time with her. I have had a pair of IB's for a year now, and my male is just now starting to be more dominant with her. This whole past year I thought, "What the heck is going on?" He would display, but as soon as she would come near her he would BOLT! Gone like lightning!! But I think after all this tiime, he's finally said enough is enough! Hopefully that's what is going on with your Dave

I bet he's just sizing her up right now.

How hard was it for you to find a hen?? It was pretty difficult for me to find one within an hour of my home!

Congratulations!!!

Thank you :) Well part of the problem I have is hesitating to let her out of her cage and to leave him in too long. The female is hand raised and very human oriented and I don't think would do well o her own and the male is wild wild wild and I don't believe in caging wild animals. So right now they visit on each side of their own little worlds. I put him in the first night I brought her home and he seemed quite content and not at all disturbed by being caged (as long as I stayed about 3-5 feet away) but I let him out the next morning.
I will probly try again soon to see if he wants to "visit". He makes no effort to get to her, nor her him. They just watch each other. She has laid me 3 eggs in 4 days. I sure wish they were fertile :'( I am pondering cooking up the eggs to feed to the chickens.... Is that ok? I don't want them to go to waste and have a dog and several chickens that would be grateful......

It took me about 2 months to find a hen. Finally got lucky on ocala4sale :) she was $45 and considering how tame she is I think she was worth it. I have picked her up and stroked her several times now and she loved eating things right from the hand. The biggest trouble I had was finding a SINGLE female. Most were selling a breeding set. Usually 2-4 hens and one boy. And many I ran across had very washed out feathers, both male and female, the colors weren't as bright and beautiful.

I would be cautious about letting her out to roam-just in case. Even though she's incredibly tame it would be horrible if she took off on you. Of course I always think of the worst situation especially if I have alot invested into an animal. I think recommended pen time for a new location is about 3 months but since she is so tame, I bet you'll luck out. When I bought my peahen she was NOT tame. Grunted at me constantly, pacing the pen, acting sketchy...it took her almost this whole past year before she would stay with 15 ft. of me. Finally I can be in the pen and she'll come within 2 feet of me now hoping for treats. So again, I have to congratulate you on a great find!
yeah, that's too bad those eggs aren't fertile! But you can definitely fry those up for other animals. My dog has been battling his weight (he's an overweight beagle according to the vet) for years now. Since our 2 ducks have started laying again he gets a duck egg every morning and he loves it! His fur is silky smooth and his appetite is much better. He is losing weight and doesn't act like he's starving any more, nor does he scarf down all of his food. Since we've been giving him his egg every morning, he seems satisfied and not hungry at all.
I always feed an over abundance of eggs to the birds as well. But these days, the chicken eggs are sold before they're laid! So the dog is the lucky one! My hubby used to love the ducks eggs-when he thought they were just huge chicken eggs. When he found out they were duck eggs, he just stopped eating them
