I have them in my laundry room now. But I wouldn't mind having them elsewhere.

The coop is not yet finished. We do have a garage but it is not squirrel or mouse proof. If I put them in a large dog crate - the plastic kind with the steel door, and attach hardware cloth over the door do you think that would be safe?

How would I have the heat lamp over the crate though? I have seen dog crate brooders but I don't remember seeing the lamp.
 
I put my lamp on top of the cage and wrapped towels around one end to keep in the heat.

I also tied cardboard around the botton 12 inches all around the cage to cut down drafts.

That looks great. But mine is the type that is mostly plastic. The top and bottom pieces fit together. The only real opening, aside from slots in the upper top section is the grated door. I could set it in front of the door maybe?
