Welcome to BYC, Homestead! You're going to be a big help to many.

I sure enjoyed reading these posts! I need to clip the wings of my girls, they have a huge free range area that even includes our garden and yet they feel the need to roam around the (fenced off?!) yard. If it was just me I wouldn't mind, & it warms my heart to glance out & see their chickie faces at the patio door staring in at me, but we really want to prevent our 2 pups from having access to the Poo! Evidently some sort of canine delicacy (bleh!) Love the night-time suggestion, that makes so much sense. Thanks to all the smarties that share their experience with noobs like me!

Oh, hee hee, I forgot to mention my 2 pups are border collies LOL! (ages 5 and 14 but permanent pups in my opinion)

Hey GaleFamily! Welcome to BYC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad this post helped ya too!!

I did it! And at the time DH wasn't fond of the chickens so wasn't much of a help. He tried, but the bird flapped it's wings, so it got handed over to me and I held it and clipped the wings - on my chicken that doesn't like being touched!!

Once you get them in a good position where they can't move and you can clip one of the wings, you're good to go. It's easy to see where to clip and everything, just look at some of the diagrams posted around here.

I've only had my chickens since June, and clipped their wings for the first time in Sept I think it was... somewhere around there.

Once you do it one time, you'll be confident for next time!

Good luck!

Thanks fls!!

We just did it! My boyfriend held them while I clipped each one's right wing. It was terribly easy and I checked the BYC link again first to see the diagram. They can still jump up on things and not fall down when jumping back to the ground. One of the chickens is in the middle of molting, so she only had a couple feathers to clip. We'll have to keep an eye on her.
