So is being in the 10th percentale for weight all that bad???

My little brother's knees were bigger around than his thighs, but I still saw him wolf down an entire box of cereal every morning! The 10% means that 90% of kids their age are bigger than him. Someone has to be the smallest. If every kid gained 20#, he'd still be in the 10th percentile, but that doesn't mean he's underweight. If they're healthy and fit and the doctor is concerned, suggest replacing the fruit in their diet with Skittles and Laffy Taffy. That way they'le blend right in with the "big" kids.

I have 2 kids that are always under 15%. My 8 yr old DD was below 5% for weight for awhile. Both of them eat continuously. My Dr isn't worried as long as they are healthy and they are. They never get sick.

On the flip side is my 6yr DD. She out weighs the 8yr old and is almost as tall. She takes after my DH.

My oldest 2 kids have always been in the 95% and up since they were born. The Dr.told me they were on the chubby side and all I could do is look at her and

they are not even near fat and both are very active so I dont pay any attention to that chart anymore.

I was in the same boat. When my son was 8 they told me he was in the 95th percentile for weight. I reminded them his age so they measured his height. He was up at the top of the charts there

I guess he's gonna be bigger than his old man from what they are telling me. Those charts are OLD, I wouldn't worry about them. They are almost as bad as the BMI charts.

My ds has never gotten out of the 5th. His ped isn't worried about it and says as long as he's healthy there's no worry. If he's not worried, neither am I. I don't agree with percentages anyways.

The Health Dept that does the check ups said that my DD is obese for her age.

She is five years old, one inch short of 4 foot tall and 52 lbs. Now is that overweight????

My family doctor is not concerned about it as long she eats well and exercise more than we do LOL!

My neice is ten years old, weigh 180 lbs (or more), and exercise like no tomorrow but stops at the kitchen every five minutes. Her mother is concerned about her weight and she always have been so heavy since she was a baby. Now DX with ADD, her meds are helping her focus and her weight has not come back down at all. Now for more blood tests and probably the brain is faulty because my neice would just eat non stop, until she is so full and still keeps on eating. Her brain is not telling her that she is full. Hopefully that is the case and then everyone can help her lose the weight....I know I sure do!

This board gives good advice. I wouldn't worry as long as your son appears to be healthy. People, including kids, are all different. My two sons were thin as kids but had lots of energy. I grew up in a family of six children and all of us were thin in those days, even though my southern mother cooked with pork, lard, and Crisco. I thought I would never lose my knobby knees, and finally my face grew and my nose got smaller!

We were also active, playing outdoors a lot. In fact, if my mother saw a really skinny kid, always boys, she would say, "Doesn't he look wormy?" I haven't heard that in years, maybe because so many kids are heavier now.

My oldest daughter is a skinny minnie too. She just dropped to the 25th%. When she was a baby she was always around the 75th. She is also the oldest in her class, but one of the shortest. She will be 11 in September and is 67#. Her 6 yr old sister is 57#! She would rather eat a salad any day of the week than anything else. Unless we go to McD's for a treat. That kid can put away and LOVES big macs!! Go figure

Anyhow, Dr didn't seem concerned and thinks she just hasn't started her growth spurt yet. Things she will spring up over the summer. Both of her paternal grandmothers were less than 5'2", but her maternal grandmothers were over 5'7". I think she will lean towards the more petite side.
I agree with the other posters though that as long as they are eating good foods and are healthy to not worry about it. They will just likey be thin adults. Not a bad thing

A truly "underweight" child will have no energy, get sick & have no energy "reserves" so will stay sick longer, and be generally "frail" and weak....

If active & healthy & energetic & strong, then I wouldn't worry about it....

My pediatrician said that we are often so used to seeing "chubby" kids, that the leaner ones seem "too thin" to alot of us... My 7 yr old DD is lean with a TINY waist; but a bundle of high energy & health.... we should all be so lucky!!

I think the problem is no one has changed the charts for decades. It doesnt take into account how the society has changed
