So is wood shavings good or bad?

It should be. I've only heard negative things about cedar. I've never heard either way that spruce is bad or good but I'm guessing it's okay.

I use pine exclusively. Eastern Red Cedar(which isn't a cedar but a juniper) is aromatic and not good. Hardwood shavings can get fungus which is also harmful.
