Wow-Thanks! I just read about your onion, and I have to say I felt relieved to hear that I'm not the only one out there that for some reason likes to watch those roots grow! I guess it does sound sort of odd, but it's fun to see the vegertable turn into another plant. I can hardly throw out the left-over sweet potato roots from the garden. This year I ended up with tiny wine bottles of green vine growing on the kitchen window sill all winter. Then I stuck them back in the ground where they can turn into more vegetable!
What I really wanted to offer up is that the roots don't rot or get icky looking if you just drain the old water out, rinse the roots, and put in new cold water say every third day or so. I am currently doing an experiment w/store-bought carrots ( the kind with the green still on) where I cut the greenery off leaving 1/4" of carrot on there and stick it in the water until it roots again(which is kinda funny since carrots ARE roots...). I have some back in the ground already to see how it goes. They are growing great. Of course, I do have rows of sowed carrots out there too just to prove that I'm not a complete crazy person w/nothing better to do. I'm really just very curious about it. It would be sorta neat if you could keep growing carrots from a carrot, which is most likely the case.
Can anyone guess what the real challenge is here?? Yep, it's How long can we keep these cool experients going before the chickens devour them all in a blink of an eye! And Boy, does that ever happen around here if the garden gate isn't secure every second of the day!

It's not like it's time consuming to stick an onion on the window sill MFB. Surely I'm not the only one that does this, notice Deb and Dawn both did/do this with potatoes? Get with it man, it's just another plant.
