What is the best way to control flies in the chicken pen. We have seven chickens and two ducks. We’ve never had a problem with the flies being bad before. This summer though, the flies are terrible. Is there a product we can use that will easily help control the flies?

I bought this stuff to keep mosquitoes off my goats, after I saw them using it to keep flies off a cow. It can be sprayed on the walls. It also works on lice and mites and labeled for use in chickens with no withdrawal time for eggs... Under $8 lasted me 2 + years with 82+ birds, 2 large goats, and 3 medium dogs. In the equine section at the feed store... active ingredient is permthrin.

Also, you can make homemade traps using a water or soda bottle with it's top inverted like a funnel cone... a little raw meat or oddly enough an apple slice to attract them. Look for some other versions online.

I won't personally use DE... but you might be able to use some PDZ to keep things dried out a little... it might help. :fl

I have a large chicken tractor with a pull out poop tray. When I clean and empty it I sprinkle it with sand and a light dusting of DE. There are no flies and no odor! It has been very hot and humid in our area so we should be seeing lots of flies. Not sure it is but I suspect the DE is helping a lot. I do not use DE in the garden where pollinators could be harmed. Hope this helps!

Rescue fly traps work relatively well. Permethrin based sprays are also somewhat effective. I use both. I also have an electric zapper about 20 feet from the coop. Sticky traps high up in the run out of reach can also help. Golden Rod traps seem more effective than others available in my area. Hope some of these ideas help

What kind of bedding in run?
Deep litter will 'eat' up the poops for fewer fly nurseries.
