Hey y’all!
I’m excited to be posting on this site, I have found so much wonderful information over the past few months... our family has been able to learn so much and we’re excited to begin our new venture with pet ducks!
I’m about to start preparing our yard with appropriate plants, I’m ordering seeds from turner’s tonight and we will be building the safe pen this weekend, constructing it around a repurposed chinese water dragon habitat... now a duck coop!
But I have questions!!
#1. There are no duck hatcheries near us so I may be forced to order ducklings online... which seems harsh and dangerous to send baby ducks through the mail (I know it’s done all the time but still...) my question is:
Do ducks normally fare well in the mail? I could not stomach opening a box of broken ducks
#1 1/2. A better question... does anyone hatch Welsh Harlequins or Silver/Gold Appleyards or Blue Swedish near Houston in the Great State of Texas? I would love to go pick up baby ducks as a family trip (how fun right?!). (Update! I just found a place out in Magnolia, that’s pretty close! But I would still love more options
)
#2 Where we live it’s hot... if I have a very safe pen can I keep my ducks out in the day? I can provide more heat of course, but chilling is not a issue here because the air is so humid. Any advise from duck raisers from down here? And so I need to worry about too much heat? We have lots of shade in and around the duck pen and the yard.
More questions to follow I am sure
Thanks for your advise and take care!
