I have a pair of burban red turkeys that I raised this spring. I noticed them mating several times this week. Then this morning the hen laid an egg. Why are they laying now? I thought they onlylaid in the spring. Since she laid one egg is that a fluke thing or will she probably keep laying? I was going to incubate some in the spring but I thought about hatching a few now IF she keeps it up.

Don't know about the brooding question as we haven't got there yet but our turkey started laying this week too. Her first egg, two days ago, was a complete and total surprise as we don't even have a male yet. Then yesterday she built a nest and today she laid another egg. Guess some of them lay in the fall if they are ready. I'm assuming they will lay in the spring too to make babies ... I hope ...

A couple of my turkey hens (older ones, not this years' young ones) laid up into the fall this year until not too long ago. The others had all quit but those two laid for a long time... Last year I had some lingering layers into the fall too.
