So new, don't even have my first chickens yet!

Do you know you can find Duck threads at "Other Backyard Poultry forum" above that can fill you in and the specifics of duck rearing.

For chickens, the Learning Center is a great place to start. Welcome to the flock.

Thank you! I've been scouring for information, learning a lot! My husband and I have been talking about plans for the spring. We're building a greenhouse and other structures that we need desperately, so we're going to start small with chickens so that we can make good use of the nice little houses we've already constructed and have sitting in the shed. I'm settled on getting two or three Jersey Giants, two hens (I'll pay for sexed), or two hens and a rooster. I'm also going to be getting more ducks. All for pets and eggs this year which I'm glad about. Housing was my biggest concern, so this is why we're scaling down given all the other projects we're going to do this year.

This is going to be our first chicken coop. We did install vent holes on the sides last year after I took this photo of this coop. We made a few sort of like this last year for ducks, and each of them comfortably fit 4 large ducks with no fuss. We're going to set this on stilts of sorts half buried in the ground, surround the stilted area with chicken wire and fill with straw as a self-composting base. The door will stay but we're going to add a ramp that they can use to get in and out of this when it's raised off of the ground. The roof hinges open. This will be their summer home of sorts. We have a giant storage shelter shed thing on our property that we're going to be using for overwintering and storing wood, and we'll work on that after the spring for winter use. The chickens, like the ducks, will be free to go in and out of their shelters and wander the property and keep my gardens pest free during the day. What do you all think?

Sorta wanna decorate the front of it here too, heh! Might paint a flower or let my girls do it in the spring.
