So my husband I and just adopted 10 hens starting from chicks and an adult rooster. The hens are all about 3 months old. We introduced the rooster about 2 weeks ago and everyone is doing great. I was wondering when can we let them all be free range and so the rooster will keep the girls safe and what's the best method to get them back in at dusk?

So new here and will greatly appreciate help :D
 
I don't know about the adult rooster but, often people lock new birds into the coop for a few days, so they know that is their home. Afterwards they return to the coop at dusk. I am wondering if the adult rooster will get too randy with them before they are old enough to breed.

Yeah, when it get new chickens I just lock them up in my chicken coop for a week, then let them out to range. I keep the coop door open. There always back usually by 5.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, as long as they know where home is (keep them locked in the coop/run for a week or so) they should return when it gets dark. With free ranging, the rooster is not going to be much protection if you have any kind of predators, they are more of an early warning system, so if you do free ranging be prepared for losses. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/701610/free-range-or-not-what-does-everyone-prefer

Welcome to the site. I'd also recommend locking them in a the coop for a week or so, so they know where home is. :')
