So now I feel like crap

I grew up on a farm. We grew a lot of our own food, both animal and vegetable. As a married adult with children, we have raised chickens for eggs when we lived where we could. I love chickens. I find them entertaining and therapeutic. The eggs are just a bonus. I try to garden, but I'm less successful than my farming family. Luckily they all grow enough to share. That's not really the point, though.

I have been watching some of the youtube videos on commercial egg production. I knew it was bad, but these videos are horrific. It makes me feel like crap for ever having eaten a storebought egg and not trying harder to purchase farm grown when I didn't have my own. I am literally sick to my stomach now.

This is one reason why so many of us have our own hens. It is a disgrace to know what they do to the poor things. Be happy you have hens that can live a wonderful life, that you've given them the best they could ask for!

I guess because we have always raised a lot of our own food, I just never bothered to research how horrible commercial chicken house conditions are.

For What It's Worth ... I think you'll see the Worst of the Worst on YouTube. Some of the large farms in my area are quite lovely. Though I wouldn't buy so-called "free range" eggs from any commercial establishment as those hens tend to be ... not as clean, not as healthy, and act a lot more stressed than traditionally housed hens. Maybe once the "colony cages" are the standard for the industry the hens will have found a happy medium. But I'd still rather eat a small flock backyard/pastured egg any day!

I haven't seen the video. But I have had some personal experience with animal rights groups. They have an agenda, and the truth isn't on it. One of these groups did a damaging video of alleged abuses at an egg farm near where I used to live. Turned out the video was staged. Last I heard the egg farm had filed a defamation suit against the animal rights group. Abuses do occur. But things are not nearly as bad or as widespread as these groups would have you believe.
