Went into our local Orschelns today, to get my husband a new pair of boots. of COURSE I had to go check out the ducks and chicks. I put my hand into the bin to play with the ducks and they went nuts for my ring (mine at home do this too so I didn't think much at first) but they seemed so rabid for it, that It made me look at their feeder, it was EMPTY. Then I looked at their waterer, it was completely empty too. It was 1:30 p.m. and the store had been open since 11 a.m. Then I noticed that the chickens food was empty too. There was probably 100 chicks in the brooder and at least 60 ducks.

Hubs ask me "do I need to go find someone?" and I said YES. So he took off and they took forever so I finally took the waterer and went to the bathroom myself.

Those poor ducks. I KNOW they hadn't drank for a while. They were like fleas they were attacking it so badly, I even sat the waterer on one of the poor duckies heads! Oops. Then hubs showed back up and said that they told him they'd just been fed/watered an hour before. I don't believe that.... so we found the bag of feed and started feeding the chickens and ducks. You couldn't even hardly get into the feeders they were so hungry.

Finally she showed up and said "oh, did you find the feed??"

Yes dear, I found the feed and did YOUR job. Oh, and the bag of feed was almost empty so I couldn't give them enough.

We went over, found the feed and I told hubs that I needed to check before we left again. I came over and they were out of food again so I just picked up the bag and started scooping. I happened to look over and the same woman was there, just kinda looking at the chicks in another brooder, not really *doing* anything. I was so steamed, as it seemed obvious they were SO HUNGRY. I then told hubs that if I saw that again (and i'm in there every few days now) that I would call corporate office, and possibly the local animal control and turn them in.

Then I'd have to start driving 45 miles for my pine shavings and duck/chicken food. LOL

I do understand your anger.

But you do know chicks do run out quite easily.

I feed my chicks many many times a day and everytime I look they are still out, and they eat like they are starving. It's just what chicks do.

So I wouldn't hold it against them unless it seems they never have food, or the chicks look unhealthy.

At my orscherln's it's all young boy teens with piercing that have absolutely no clue about farm stuff what so ever. lol

Thats why I shop at Buccheits.

They do have a bit of an attitude though. Its tough getting any help at ours. Thats where I go to since my local TSC seems to never have what I need. Pretty much every experience has involved employee rudeness. I wanted chicks today and the guy seemed very put out that I asked. He actually just told me to grab my own chicks.

Way to go! I would definitly call animal control if you go again and they have no food or water and look unhealthy. Again good for you!!!

Thanks everyone. now I feel like I was justified. lol

The chickens were hungry, but the ducks, they were HUNGRYYYYY!! You no how ducks are anyway, they are like 99.4% water to start with, and there were so many. No way had they been watered only an hour before.

I suddenly feel like I need to check on them every day :p
(it's a 15 min trip one way tho)
