If I do quail, it'll likely be in a garage, but I still live in a neighborhood. Anyone want to post a video for me? I would love to do quail since I can't have a chicken roo.

Coturnix roos can be loud if they don't have enough hens to breed. I have what I call a Bachelor Pen, nothing but roos in there they crow a lot! And it gets earpiercing when you're right beside them feeding ugh! LOL! But my roos that have 4-5 hens to themselves crow only like once a day if that.

I have 23 birds about 7 weeks old. They are crowing like crazy but with just that few birds, it is not so bad. If you get 40 or 50 crowing all at once, then it gets loud. I actually have wild birds in my yard that make a heck of a lot more noise than the quail. I think that maybe the folks in my neighborhood just think they are some strange bird or crow. I do hear them in the middle of the night sometimes and it makes me want to remove their heads!

I think I have 5 hens out of the 23 so the roos are fighting and crowing more than normal. I have been debeaking right and left the last few days trying to discourage fighting.

But a few quail with a about 4 or 5 hens to one roo is ideal. You will hardly ever hear them make much noise at all.

THNX all!

I checked youtube, but nothing that I watched was "loud." I know they can be loud, but these were all of the sweet little chirping.

I live in the city too, my house is on a corner and I keep them in pens on the side of the house with no neighbors and I doubt my neighbors ever notice them. For awhile mine were going A LOT but then I figured out that some of the birds I thought were hens were roos! When I got it down to one roo per cage they only crow maybe 2 or 3 times a day on average? After I got this figured out I think I could put them 10 feet from the neighbors' house and it wouldn't be a problem. I don't think the crow is any louder than a similar sized wild bird that has a high pitched call.

You really can't get the full sound by watching a video. They can be loud and sometimes annoying. And they do it at all times of day not just morning or evening. I hear them at night out there crowing. I deffinetly lik the call of a Bobwhite way more...but love my Coturnix!
