My son had 6 chicks in a small coop outside. Something tore the bottom of the coop and the chicks are all gone.
My cousin had 6 large hens and a rooster. She went out one morning, opened the pen, and a bobcat ran out. It had killed all of her flock.
I've just started raising chickens and have 2 buff orpingtons and 2 golden buffs. They are just starting to get feathers. I'm really getting attached to them and am worried about their safety.

We put roofing scraps (tin roof installed over winter) around the bottom of out run/coop area. We dug out about 3in down, and ran the tin and wire, then packed the dirt in tight to keep out critters. We live in rural Georgia so we have coyotes, bob cats, weasels, raccoons and possums. All of which can and will go after chicks, chickens and eggs. Good luck!

Thanks. That's a good idea. I am going to buy a coop with a covered run. Hopefully, I'll be able to let them out in the fenced backyard when I'm outside.

Just thought I'd update.
My girls are enjoying the free range of the backyard every day. When it starts to get dark at night they go into their small coop that I got from Tractor Supply. I go out and close the coop for the night.
So far... so good.
Now we are just waiting for eggs. :)
