So Santa gave me some money for a coop and chickens...

G’Day from down under Englishchick :frow Welcome!

What a wonderful gift and congratulations on your upcoming relocation.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

awe, so I just came to take a look to see if anyone had say hi and there are loads of people! what a great website, I'm so pleased and happy to have joined. grateful for the advice, if 4 chickens is a better start then il put my name down for 4. The suggested minimum for rehoming ex bats says 3, hence that was my thinking.

I've been reading through some of the articles and the whole debeaking thing seems a bit odd. Do debeaked chickens need any different care?

Debeaked chickens have trouble scratching and pecking and foraging for their own food. They scoop the feed with the beak instead of picking it up. They do best with pellets. The feeders will accumulate the broken bits and fines that they can't pick up and eat. You can make a mash out of that so you don't waste it. You can also go the fermented feed route. They will not know what fresh vegetables, fruit and other treats are but with some time and experimenting they'll figure out you aren't trying to poison them. Their feathers will be in poor shape because they have trouble preening. A little extra protein will help with new feathers. Check them over for mites when you first bring them home and be ready to treat so you don't infest your new coop.
Congrats! They will fill your heart with joy as they learn to live in their new world.
