So since size DOES matter...how big?

This is the easiest way for me to think of it, when calculating square footage. A square foot is a square that is 1 foot x 1 foot. When you are calculating how many square feet are in an area, you are calculating how many of those 1 foot x 1 foot squares are in that area.

1 foot x 1 foot = 1 square foot

2 feet x 2 feet = 4 square feet

When doing the math for square footage, in round numbers, you multiple the length by the width.

1 ft x 1 ft = 1 sq ft

2 ft x 2 ft = 4 sq ft

5 ft x 10 ft = 50 sq ft

I hope this helps.
