so the 1st egg was just on the ground in the run. do i train?

Give them some time. A first egg in the run probably just means they did not know it was coming.

My first egg was in the run, but the second from her and the first from the next pullet to lay were in the nest box the next day. I didn't have to do a thing.

I assume that the very first time-er didn't know what was happening till too late, or something like that.
