So this hen last year looked like a washed out Rhode Island Red, so did the other one by the way. They came from McMurray hatchery and now that they have filled out from the molt from hell. their first true molt this one looks a little suspicious. The other is a very dark red and very indicative of a good quality RIR. The picture I am posting has me wondering where the pattern came from and if it is not a RIR after all.

Out of the same order came the 5 Light Brahma's who's grandmammy stepped out on Grandpappy and lay a green / blue egg. Though now that they have finished their molt and have come back into lay their eggs are a very dark olive sometimes speckled with blue.

Lucky you! It's a hatchery suprise! Really, sounds a little screwy but I'd like a brahma type that layed green and blue.

I've decided to fix the egg color in the light Brahma's so future generations will lay the blue green egg. so in 3 generations or so I'll have the light Brahma type that will consistently lay blue green. I'ts going to be a fun project to get there.

Hmm...looks a bit red sexlink to me. I had a New Hampshire/Leghorn cross that had similar coloring. A very good layer and a nice bird - hope yours is, too!

Those Light Brahma eggs sound very pretty. 🙂

Lays a near jumbo size egg 9 out 10 ten times. And since I moved one of my home raised roosters into teh pen, finally warming up to contact. LOL the little bugger tried to grab the plastic cup with sunflower hearts out of my hand. I use the treat to call the birds into the coop at night, they now come running into the coop when they see me coming.
