Sorry, still shaking it off a little. I'm on my way in to work this morning, and I come around a bend, on the backroads not more than a half mile from my house, and come on a 1980 something hatchback blocking half the road after it hit a light pole. The drive lights still on. I threw on my flashers and got out, checked things out, looking for the driver. I can see that the driver’s side window is down, the windshield has been hit, probably by this person’s melon… But no person. I even looked in the back in case they ricocheted back there. Nothing. Walked back to my car, called 911 and reported it. They asked me to stay, even though I really have no information. So, I called DH to tell him to go a different way from the house, and then a guy from work to tell them I’m gonna be late (I got here at 0620 instead of 0600). Two cars drive by me while I wait, nobody stopped. Finally the cop shows up, we get out… He calls in the plate, asked me if I saw it happen, if I passed anybody walking (which I didn’t.) Then he let me go.

Happy Thursday. Dang way to start it. Glad there wasn’t anybody in the car, honestly. I didn’t want to have to juggle my phone (911) and struggle to remember EMT skills from over 20 years ago.

I know this isn't that tramatic, since there wasn't anybody in the car, and they were long gone since the engine was cold... but it made me start thinking about what I would have done if the driver WAS still in the car. Made me think about the one other accident I came on and helped with until the authorities arrived.

Lucky you didn't hit the car. I hate it when the adrenaline kicks in like 1/2 hr later.

I wonder if it hit a Deer ?? and if they are from VT, NH , Maine they got out to go chase it
:lau

I remember being in VT back in 1980's when a Ford Bronco (the big one) hit a HUGE Buck. I heard the crash, ran out to the street ( 25 yards away), see the truck with the WHOLE FRONT END PUSHED IN ! Guy is swearing loud... gets out, goes to back of truck, takes out shotgun and off into the woods he goes . :frow Bye, lol.
He was not hurt that he said but man it was funny what he did.

I don't think it was a deer... it is an area with deer, but it looked like they aimed for it and hit the pole. I honestly think the guy was drunk and got scared and took off.

But yea... adrenaline an hour later... part of it was thinking about the dangerous situation I put myself in... unlit back road, all by myself...

What is scary is the thought of 'what if this is a setup?' What if there is a bad person or two is is trying get a potential victim out of their car and out in the open to jump, rob, assault or kill in order to rob them?

Sorry, I always tend to think on the devils advocate POV. I'm a retired health care provider also and my first instinct is to help but then my second instinct for self preservation kicks in.

We live in a crazy world. Glad you are safe.

We've come upon accidents in the past which were clearly alcohol related, often with the drunk sleeping it off in the car. You did the right thing, obviously, by calling it in. Agreed with Microchick. It could have been a set up. Traveling alone presents a certain vulnerability. Sad to have to think that way, this day in age, but there you have it.
