So was this a bad time to butcher????

What ??? Pay a processor to pluck our chickens? Here, I thaught we all raised these chickens to be self sufficient and plucking was just part of the journey.

Been there, done that. Time to move on to a different journey!

No, actually I don't mind doing it, but if there are alot to be done I sure am not going to mind paying someone else to help out. Getting older and my hands are not as forgiving as they once were.

I'm glad they worked out well for you! As for bleeding out, I keep them in the cone until the dripping stops. We usually have two in the cones "drip drying" while others are getting gutted. If you aren't sure, sitting in the cones longer won't hurt them- but you do want to be sure most of the blood gets out.

I use a processor for anything bigger than the quail most times Although I have processed and actually got my cones from Jaku

I love my processor, it is well worth the $2 to me I have to drive a 1/2 away to get there total time is about 2-3 hours and then a little while at home the next day after soaking in cooler when I touch everything up, clean them well and package them for freezing.

I hardly think it makes me any less of a chicken owner

though I am always impressed when I see people tackle a big processing jobs on their own. This just is so much easier for me, and less sad too as the chickens have way more of a personality. I like being able to hand them to a man in a box and walk away but I am also glad that I have done it and can and think everyone should at least once.

I certainly don't blame you there- butchering can be a pain, especially until you get a good set up. Maybe I'm just nuts, but my buddy and I look forward to butchering day. We get a day away from screaming kids to hang out, drink beer, listen to the radio, etc. And to look at a refrigerator literally FULL of birds and know that YOU did it from start to finish is a great feeling!
