So, we have a Mallard... what do we do with it?

Clipping of one wing will keep the mallard with your flock. Letting a domestic duck fly off to be "happy" as Duckgirl suggested would not be advised since it will ave no basic survival instincts. Besides I am sure you don't want to loose that surprise addition to your flock. Enjoy, and please post pictures when you can.

I have not clipped wings and have loved my flyers. They have not flown the coop yet.... But I bought more ladies and they must have had more freedom in their prior home as such I found my boys and new ladies circling the barn and flying over my head and into the field. Since it looked like they were practicing for a longer journey, they are in lock down until further notice.

I started with Pekins and Mallards. Mine all free-range. I now have a nighthouse. Many nights, the Mallards do not care to be closed up. They can fly over the fenced backyard to avoid predators.

I am amazed that my Mallards hang with my non-flying ducks right around the house. I live on a farm with about 23 acres of water. They sometimes graze close to the water's edge, buy all my ducks confine themselves to the kiddie pool rather than enter the pond since my Pekin, P!nk, was taken by a snapping turtle.

My Mallards do love the kiddie pool much more than the Pekins and Runners. They also leave the rest of the flock sometimes (in pairs) and go out of sight.

They lay the most perfect green eggs! YUM!
