So what do you do if you hit an animal?

I'm kind of surprised no one has answered this thread title with "bring it home and say look ma, we got dinner!"

Our dog snuck out of the yard and was hit and killed a mile and a half from our house this summer. My huge feelings of guilt aside, I do wish whoever had hit him would have had the courtesy to stop and call our number on his tag. My DH found him with no warning and it was awful for him.

Well, I might be a bad person..

I swerve to hit possums. I avoid raccoons as they could cause some bad damage to my Aveo.

I slammed into a Shepherd. I felt AWFUL. The thing fell down a huge hill. I pulled into the place that I knew owned the dog...I knocked on the door, told them and saw the dog STREAK through the field towards the owner's buffalo. I was thanked for letting them know.

What REALLY ticks me off is when someone hits a deer, knows the deer isn't dead and lets the deer lay draped over a wire fence. I thought the deer was just stuck...the neck was broken, but it didn't die. I raced to the house and got the only gun I could find. A .22. One shot to the head and that was it. Poor thing...

Me too. Sue me. Anyhow, I always get out and check on the animal. I carry a large knife in my glove compartment in case it needs finished off. I can't tell you how many deer I have put down out here in whitetail country, even a couple of geese once. I also carry a skinning knife in the car, in case it has purdy fur that hasn't been damaged too badly.

Why are the deer more important than the possums?

(Nevermind, I know what your answer will be, it just doesn't compute with me).

Life is life’s greatest gift. Guard the life of another creature as you would your own because it is your own. On life’s scale of values, the smallest is no less precious to the creature who owns it than the largest. ~Lloyd Biggle Jr.

I agree... we shouldnt try to harm animals on purpose. I mean , if they are caught eating your chickens...well, maybe you have a case...
But just walking across the road.... nah... i dont get it either.

Are you talking deer, dog, cat or???

I hit a deer once...it was horrible. Back was broken...I had nothing to kill it with. Middle of no where, no cell phone reception.

Other than that, I've hit a rabbit, a few quail, a pheasant and some mice. My mom hit a Great Horned Owl once and we stopped but it was dead.
