So what do you do if you hit an animal?

Yes Gritty.

I swerve to avoid hitting anything. I catch spiders and put them outside or I leave them alone...

I think it's horrible to deliberately hit any living creature.

But then, when you get a flat tire or damage to your vehicle, you might think twice...

While teaching me to drive my dad tried very hard to break me of the habit of swerving to avoid hitting a creature. Swerving can cost you your own life or the life of another person. In my mind I know that. In my heart? Well.....

I also catch spiders and put them outside. I recently smushed a spider, but it was biting me.

I know...I'm sooo very bad about it too. Thus far, I've been incredibly lucky...I just cannot fathom killing a living creature just for the sake of killing it.

Sucks, but she would've just suffered!!! Awful, even more aweful cause I was not prepaired to do it...

In 53 yrs I had never hit a single animal til we moved to the country now I am beginning to get a running tally so far 10-12 rabbits that would get 1/2 across then turn back the other way, 9 possums, 3 squirrels, 8 coons, those suckers will wreck your front end alignment,1 chicken. On my narrow country roads I don't wish to go over the embankments. So far I have not hit any domesticated animals. I know where they live & often lay in the road where you have to honk to get them to move. Now let me also say that these critters were hit at about 5:30 in the morning. I have stopped to make sure the coons were dead mainly cause I had to go back home get another vehicle to get to work. The first one I hit was a possum it upset me to no end. Now I am getting pretty hardened.
Before I had hit my second animal a young lady ended up in our er trying to swerve to miss a squirrel. She was on life support for months, continues to be in a vegetative state. I quit swerving to miss critters after that.

I had a wild turkey hit me once...he flew away when he realized he couldn't get in the vehicle to finish me off.

Why are the deer more important than the possums?

(Nevermind, I know what your answer will be, it just doesn't compute with me).

Life is life’s greatest gift. Guard the life of another creature as you would your own because it is your own. On life’s scale of values, the smallest is no less precious to the creature who owns it than the largest. ~Lloyd Biggle Jr.

Exactly!!

Yesterday a doe hit my car, right smack in the front passenger door, as I was on my way to work. I turned around, worried I would have to deal with an injured or dying deer, but she was just stunned. She. Got up, shook her head, and wobbled across the road anyway (headed in her original direction). No obvious blood, all legs working fine.

Later in the day, I found myself braking for a crow in the roadway.... Seriously - a bird that could just fly up and out of the way, as they ALWAYS do. It's just that it was a bird, and I keep chickens, which are birds, and they CAN fly, but might not.... And birds are birds. They have birdie features, as do my chickens..... So, suddenly I am not inured to hitting wild birds any more.

They's somebody's baby, or mama, or sumpin' like that.

But I do smoosh some spiders i find inside my house..... The outside spiders are chicken treats.
