So what is the correct shade of Buff?

From right there, it speaks to my taste. Not so pale yellow, not so red either. I like them a sort of orange color, but not so much that there's any red tint coming through. My own Buff Ameraucana pair is what I'd believe to be a very nice buff color. But, to each their own.

( As a note, the cockerel looks very bright and orange in there - Yes, that color is aided by a low set sun, but the even tones and the lack of red or pale yellow is exactly what I like. Yes he does have some khaki in the tail, but that is aside the point. )

Isn't that the pair you bought from Pips and Peeps? She has GORGEOUS buff ameraucanas. When I think of the perfect buff, I think of her buff cockbird that she has shown. I **love** the buff shade on that bird. Generally, I'm not a buff fan because the color isn't intense. Jean's buffs just POP with color,.. If only I could get that buff on a silkie reliably without excessive sootiness.....

Yes. Although the cockerel is actually from Gary Ramey's breeding - Jean hatched him, but bought the eggs from Gary.

I don't know which is proper, just what I like and that's the deeper gold toned birds. These are my hatchery Buff Orps (though one died last year). One was deeper gold and one was much lighter:

This is my one girl from Jody Hinkle--I really like her color.

I would refer what is the proper shade of buff to the APA. Our buffs come from Doug Akers stock and since Doug's have pretty much won every show they have been entered in I would think they are the proper color. Talking to the "old time" breeders on the United Orp group buff color is like an old gold pocket watch, not to light, not to dark. The most important is an even color.

See the even color on this? the fluff is lighter but overall the same shade. To me that is the buff color for a buff orp.

Hello,

I like to see a buff color that has a lot of pigment. My preference goes to a buff color that has shine on it. I do not like the animals with the corny dull color. Buff must be first uniform of color in all parts of the plumage and the underfluff may be a shade lighter but Buff to the skin. A touch darker or lighter Buff color, that's a personal choice. Keep a bit in the middle. Use for breeding birds that you expect from they produce offspring that can retain the color. Greetings Arie

I like the color of my F1 Am. type Buff Leghorn Bantam x Buff Dutch Bantam

Here are a couple of my show boys. The flash made their saddles and hackles a little lighter than they are, but this is the color I like on my birds.

This is one of my first boys, he has a lot of orpington in him.

This is last year's offspring out of the above cock bird. I have improved the fluff, but he has a poopy comb.

I was showing the photos of these birds to my wife, a school teacher with a Masters in English. I explained that Arie was from the Netherlands and that English was not his first language. She starting reading what Arie wrote and told me to tell Arie, "You write English better than anyone else on BYC." I think she was actually referring to my English! She also is trying to convince me that poultry comes in colors other than BUFF! Hmmm. Did anyone else know this? Poultry actually comes in colors other than pure Golden Buff? May have to check that out at a poultry show this season.
