I only have 4 ducks and in reality it would take me about 15 minutes twice a day to fill their food dish, change their pool and drinking water and clean up a bit. But because I chose to get my ducks as pets, I think it's important to spent as much time with them as I can.
I could also leave a dog outside in a run and spend 5 minutes a day filling his food and water bowls (and some people do this), but it's not why I got a pet.
I think it's worth knowing what is being published about duck ownership, and I do get concerned when folks buy ducks (or any pet for that matter) spur of the moment. As much as I am devoted to my flock, the difference between the actual experience and the idea of having them is pretty big.
Wouldn't trade them for the world!
I am happy to use the article - some of which I agree with strongly, by the way - as a starting point to explore the surprises we have had and the things we have learned about ducks. In hopes that someone will read through this thread, and get some better perspective.
I have had ups and downs with ducksitters. At one point, I had three potentials. Then they all got busy with other things - college, real jobs, etc. So my beloved is my backup. We also have neighbors who will come check up on the ducks mid-day if needed. I don't travel as much, but that does not bother me at all.
We are blessed to be within an hour to two of some very good duck vets. I know I am in the minority. I still want to know as much as I can about their care so that since I am their first responder, I can help them.
I really like the personalities the ducks have. I could just watch them all day. There have been a few days when I did, especially when they were younger.
