We are making soap today, but when we opened up my giant bucket of lye, it was wet and hard as a rock.
Do we have to get rid of it?
Is there a way to still make soap with it?

That happens when lye isn't stored in an air tight container. It will suck the moisture out of the air and form a block like that. I was always told that if it gets like that you have to throw it out at a hazardous (sp?) waste facility. Sorry but you will have to get new lye. When I store mine I wrap the container ( I usually buy small containers) top with plastic wrap to help keep out the moisture.

Yeah, we will dump it. The sad part is, its a full 5 gallons that I was given by a friend who was moving out of state, and could not take her soap supplies with her.
I will also be ordering our new lye online, because none of the stores up here will seel the right stuff, due to certain users of it.
Which I totally understand, but its frustrating nonetheless.
