Soap Makers Help!

I felt the same way! (look at the begining of this thead) Just do it.. you wont regret it..

Me too! Just look back and see the enormous amount of questions I asked and am still asking of the more experienced folks.

And, if all else fails and you end up with a rustic looking bar as we all have, you can just say, "Ya, I was trying for that look."

For you and arabookworm:

Have you picked up any books yet? Most of us find The Soapmakers Companion to be a great starting book because she goes into so much detail about what you're doing and why.

Then you need to begin collecting your oils. The decision you need to make is which oils you want to put into your soaps. That is going to take some research and the experienced ladies here are wonderful at helping. Just ask. I ordered mine from Soapers Choice.

Lye: I found mine at Ace Hardware but had zero luck with Lowe's where others have found it. If you have either of those nearby stop by and ask. I KNOW that Ace will do free "ship to store" from their website if they don't' have it in stock. Additionally, my local store checked their system and told me of another store nearby with it in stock. Ace carries the Rooto brand and I believe Lowes carries the Roebic brand. Be sure to confirm that it is 100% Lye Crystals (Sodium Hydroxide) with no additives at all. Red Devil is to be avoided. If that fails, several of the online stores carry it. I used Camden Grey for my first lye order and picked up some scents while I was at it. Their prices are great.

The stick blender and scale are easy. Just make sure the scale measures in grams as well as ounces. I measure my oils and liquids in ounces but the lye in grams to be more accurate.

Use a good online soap/lye calculator. There are several good ones out there and everyone has their favorite. I tend to use two of them - MMS and Soapcalc9. Each has advantages. MMS is great for adjusting your recipe or one you find online to make the recipe larger or smaller. Soapcalc9 allows you to see the characteristics of your bar for hardness, conditioning, bubbles, fatty acids, etc.

And, feel free to run your first recipe by us before starting. The experienced gals are awesome at helping us newbies get started and will help you tweak it so that your first batch is a success.

It may seem daunting, but it's really not. Just get EVERYTHING set out before you start working so that you don't panic because you can't find your thermometer or a spoon just when you need it. You'll be OK. Naw, you're going to be more than OK. You're going to be pretty darn proud of yourself when you make that first batch and it works!

We used to have an Ace hardward across town I can try there, but we have two Lowes so I will start with them. Thanks for the tip on the scale measurements, will look for one with grams and ounces. I look forward to getting help from my BYC soap sisters too!!!

How soon you can unmold your CP soap really depends on your soap recipe. Recipes with higher percentages of solid oils can be unmolded sooner. Same goes for recipes with a severe liquid discount can be unmolded sooner. Gelled soaps can be unmolded sooner.

I'll unmold my CP soaps 12-24 hours. With my HP soap, I had to wait a lot a lot longer. There was more liquid used (for the HP method) and it was a 100% OO.

So ... it depends.

Today, I'm making 12# of Cotton Blossom and 8# of Dragon's Blood. With the CB, I'll have a white swirl. The DB FO will make a dark brown soap. I'll unmold these tomorrow when I get up (approx 14 hours later)

Better get off to do it so I can get back to my spinning and knitting.

eta:

re: teas as liquid. Yes you can use them. I will make extra strong teas, then freeze it solid. Teas and other botanicals will stink to high heaven in the lye solution.

Longer than you think, and MUCH longer than you have patience for.

Hee hee hee. Um. You were right. I couldn't wait.

Notice that the two soaps are a different color. The bar gelled and the heart did not. So, gelling does change the color of the soap, although this bar soap is still lighter than my other milk soaps have been.

The sprinkles on the heart are crushed and dried rose petals. Doing the same thing on the gelled soap didn't work as they turned darker. Some of the other hearts have more sprinkles than this one, which is part of the reason I took the chance unmolding this one.

But, now that I unmolded one soap, I'm going to give the rest of the hearts some time to solidify before unmolding the rest of them.

BarnyardBuddies I love the sprinkles on that heart! I can't wait to start trying those difrent things with my soap. I don't have any flowers around here to use unless I went and bought some lol.

Yup. Notice also how the gelled soap is more translucent than the ungelled.

I've never done individual molds so didn't know that ungelled individuals could stay so white. That is so cool! Makes me rethink doing individual soaps

ok, thought about it. The $$ for new molds to hold 8-12# of soap and the time to do it. Then I'd probably have to go with kraft boxes or completely nekid, of invest in bags. Nah, I'll leave that to you gals to do!! I'll stick with with my molds where I don't have to cut the bars and can spend .05 per bar to wrap it in cigar band shrink wrap.

They are very, very, very pretty. I've heard that if you put a light layer of clear M&P soap on top of the individual molds, sprinkle crushed rose petals, then another light layer of clear M&P, that it comes out awesome and you don't have to worry about the rose petal falling off so easily.

I have a question

I have 3.5 bags of cranberries that I have nothing to use them for. Can I use them in my soap? I figure there has to be something I can do with them

(that would be a really cool use for those..)

I am doing my first batch with LARD..

here is the recipe..

coconut oil 26 oz
olive oil 24 oz
Lard 63 oz
crisco 27 oz

Water 22.8
Goat milk 30 oz (it is concentrate from a can, I dont have my own goat)

lye 18.6 oz

I am going to use Grapefruit E/O

so anyway I was heating my oils.. and they got too hot.. and I thought to myself how can I cool this off without getting a HUGE ice bath (it is in a very very large pot) so I stirred it with a ice pop.. the pop cooled it down 10 degrees before it melted.. I wiped it off and stuck it back in the freezer.. (I only stirred the oils)

Why would it smell.. like...... almost like old urin from a diaper.. and the lard soap cured soo fast.. I have already unmolded it and have it on the shelf with all the others curing away.. It was still warm but hard.. so I cut it.. there was still a little smell left but not as bad .. why did it smell.. it reminded me of when I mixed lye with beet juice.. *yuck*
