Soap Makers Help!

What size batch are you wanting to make?

You need to decide how many ounces of oil/fat you will be using. You put those in the calculator and it calculates the amount of lye and the amount of liquid to use.

Here is what I need to know to help you.

olive oil - 5 ounces
coconut oil - 4 ounces
Lard - ???????? tell me how much

Lye - the calculator will tell you
Milk - the calculator will tell you

additives - oatmeal - ???

lets try a pound or a half pound and see how much milk it says. I wanted to use about a pint, my milk is frozen and only wanted to thaw what is necessary.

Oatmeal, im not sure how much the total volume of everything will be, I have a whole box to use If i need to.

Coconut oil is drying - I do not use more than 10% in a recipe.

coconut oil - 2 ounces
olive oil - 5 ounces
lard - 8 ounces

lye - 2 ounces

milk - 6 ounces

oatmeal - 1 - 4 tbsp you can grind it up

Hey MP...I was wondering if using only 10% coconut oil in your soaps that you sacrifice hardness or more important lather? How long does your bar last with that percentage of coconut oil?

I think we should set up a handmade Soap Exchange/Swap for testing recipes?

Anyone game? I'd gladly ship parcel post to anyone who wants to swap a bar for some of mine? We could mail our recipe with the bar!

For my soaps I use palm oil, coconut oil, olive oil and castor oil. I don't use oil off the store shelf. I have dry skin in winter, more than 10% coconut in a 50 ounce or less recipe and my skin shows it.

For these tiny batches being done here to use 30 - 50% coconut oil is too much especially when a goatmilk soap is being made to feed the skin.

My soaps are really hard bars, I cut in about 12 hours after pour and cure 3 - 4 weeks.

I've participated in lots of soap swaps with soapmakers, and have hosted some, and I love it. If a bunch of folks here would like to do one (after the holidays, I'm assuming), I'd be happy to coordinate it.

The way a group swap works is this: First, everyone who wants to participate signs up. Let's say 10 people want to swap. So, everyone would make a batch of soap, and send 9 bars, along with sufficient money to cover shipping of same, to the swap host or hostess. Once all the packages arrive, the hostess repacks one of each bar into 10 separate packages, and mails out 9 of them (keeping one for herself, of course) to the swap participants. Everyone gets to sample everyone else's soap, for just the cost of shipping!

What say? We can have a signup in January, I guess?
