Soap Makers Help!

Oh! I can't wait to see pix of these! My turmeric batch mellowed over time to a softer buttery yellow so yours may as well.

I hope it does. I was originally going to do a yellow and pink layer, but it was so dark I left the other layer plain.

The darker spots are chunks of alkanate root. It's powdery but not super finely ground.

The chunks of color create a bit of a rustic, almost marbled look. Very cool!

Did you put it in dry or mix it into something first? When I did my Almond Bliss batch, I separated my batch into two and divided my superfatting oils into two batches. One was added straight to the plain batch and to the other I added my color to the superfatting oil before adding it into that batch. The clays I just added to my Yuzu batch were done straight in at trace.

I always just chunk it into whatever soap I want colored. If I'm doing a whole batch the same color I put the colorant into my oils before I add the lye. If I doing swirls or something I seperate the traced soap and then add.

I just made a shampoo bar for the first time. The color wasn't what I wanted and it set up real fast. I'm hoping that it turns out good though. I'll post pics when I unmold it tomorrow. Who knows it might turn out ok like some of the other ones have

I can't wait to see! I want to try a shampoo bar sometime. Some times the ones were think will be the worst soap end up being just fine or even the best soap.

Here is the Yuzu grapefruit bars I did yesterday. Some turned out really nice but some were too wavy to me.

And here is the BB wasabi I also did.

I'll get some better pictures later when I can get them outside.

I have a question for those who make a lot of soap for markets and such. How fast would you have to be going through FO or Eo to order them in the 5 # sizes? I'm thinking of getting one or two FO is the 5 # sizes to save a little money instead of shipping out 1# bottles about 30-45 days. And now that I'm getting ready for the watermelon festival I'm using it up faster. How do you store 5# of FO? I guess you have to transfer it glass? If I would go through 5# in three months would it be worth it?

Morgaine they look great!! I the waves don't look bad at all. Your layers look really good. I haven't gotten back to doing the layers just yet. I made that soap last night and it really droped me down with my basic oils again. DH had he schedule changed a work and it really is making a difrence in everything. The mill went from 2 crews working 12 hours plus, down to 3 crews and hardly any overtime at all. Their incentive pay sucks right now.

If it's a fragrance that you'll use often, then it'd be worth comparing the cost per ounce to determine whether it'd work for you to do it this way. I do know that when I was buying the four ounce containers when I first started, the cost per ounce was quite a bit more than when I started buying 8 or 16 ounce containers. Be sure to check the shipping cost differences. Often, it's possible to add and subtract things from your cart and determine at which point the shipping cost increases. If you aim for the greater number of ounces of fragrance for the shipping cost, it'll significantly lower your overall cost per ounce.

I haven't looked into amber glass bottles up til now, but in doing so, I see that you might find them at photographic equipment suppliers, like this:

Another option would be to keep smaller bottles and pre-measure to the size that you'll use in a batch, retaining an additional larger container for the times when you blend fragrances. By pre-measuring, you may save yourself a few minutes during the prep time and also give you a quick reference to see when you need to reorder.
