Soap Makers Help!

Dreaded Orange Spots

It's when your soap starts to go rancid. I have had bars do this when they were kept in the junk drawer and other places like the car console. And then I have bars that I made in my first batch over a year and half ago that are fine because of the way they were stored. Some oils are more prone to so this. Canola is one that a lot of people have had DOS, but you can use rosemary extract oil to extend the life of your oils.

You"ll have to tell us all about your trip when you get a chance to sit down lol. Did you se I got my large mold? That suckers huge. I put my soap in the basement after pouring it usually and it hardly fit through the door to the basement

. I have to do my soaping upstairs because there isn"t very good lighting down stairs. I'll have to find a hiding place I guess lol.

Wow, I didn't realize...I go around spraying everything and everyone down with lysol and try to always use antibacterial. I hate the thought of germs but I am thinking sick germs. I learn something new everyday -

I am going to have to give this soap making a try soon.

I work in health care and I use the antibacterials at work, which reduces transfering when I work with a patient. To be truthful in reducing bacteria your best form of defense is just a good handwashing versus using sprays, gels ect that are bacterial static.

Thanks for the welcome! We had a fabulous time - first time in Hawaii. We did a lot of cool things - Sunrise at Haleakala (10,000+ ft. volcano), Road to Hana (half way - I fell in a waterfall, ruined my camera

, banged up my ankle, then we were stalled by road construction), went to lunch at Mama's Fish House (yum!), enjoyed shave (no 'd') ice at Ululani's (best on Maui), went to a luau, and mostly hung out at the pool and beach at the condo we rented. I'll have to post some pix.

I Loooooove that! How much of the yellow dock did you have to use to obtain that color? I think I'm going to place an order today for all the clays and such that I would like. That would be a great color with a cranberry soap.

Also, I forget . . . Did you end up liking the alkanet root powder for your purple or not?

I put the yellow dock in my crock pot and then added enough olive oil to cover. I used the colored oil as about 12% of my total oils to get that color. It turned out great. I've been very happy with it.

Yes, I've been very happy with the alkanate powder too. It's given me a nice dark purple that's a little blueish. You just ahve to make sure that you use enough to get a purple color or else it's kinda of a lavenderish gray.

Did you get that at Texas Natural Supplies? I think I'm going to put in an order while the sale is on. Also, I see they have Red Moroccan and Red Kaolin clays there. But, that's not what you used, right? I think I recall that yours was French Red.

Edited: And, how many ounces of loose herbs is good? I don't want to buy too much or too little.

And I'm glad to hear that you had so much fun in Hawaii , though it's good to have you back too! I'm in Georgia right now at my parents. But when I get back I've gotta remember to send you some things. I got my yellow dock from the health food store. I also picked up some dragon's blood resin and I'm going to infuse that in hopes of getting a lighter mauve color. I thinking of doing two batches, one yellow dock one dragon's blood and then swirling the two with maybe some gold mica swirls too.

A pound is quite a bit, unless your planning to use it a lot. I would go with 8 oz, that way you can make several batches with out having to re-order if you do like it.

Yes, I did use French Red Clay (that's what I sent you). I have some of their yellow kaolin clay and let me tell you, it only takes a tiny bit to get a lot of color! The badedas scent I did that is two toned with the green gives me a yellow lather! I used 2 tbl for 4 pounds, but I think I could have only used one 1 tsp and gotten the color I wanted. So just a heads up about that. I got 8 oz of clay and it will be plenty to last me a while.
