Soap Makers Help!

I'm also going to show them the diff between pasteurized and homogenized vs fresh milked soap ---

Okay, what is the diff between past and homo?? I know past is heated to 180 degrees to kill bacteria....

I only use fresh goat's milk in my soaps and cheese so I haven't a clue the real diff between them and how it changes the soap...

Talking milk, someone on here asked me if I used powdered milk... Can a lay person make powdered milk?? Does anyone know how??

I think the Ren Faire will LOVE the Gothic Rose... I wish I could Swirl like you guys.... I guess I'll have to break down and make me a flat mold instead of using my 1/2 and 1/2 cartons... but then I have the problem of what to do with the cartons as we empty them..... We go thru about 6 a week and for a 10# batch of soap I use 5 to 6 depending on if I split the batch for different scents....

Pasteurized is heated yes... and homogenization is where they centrifuge the milk and all the fat molecules separate like BLOOD and serum do in a centrifuge like at the doctors office...the fat molecule actually breaks UP. This helps stabalize the reaction/dispersion of lye bonding with the fat molecule. When the lye bonds with the fat molecule...it creates a reaction which creates HEAT...but saponification can still happen with or without the reaction...what is happening when the unhomogenized/unpasteurized milk turns colors is actually scorching and saponifying the fat molecules before you even get it in the oils...this is why some folks choose to add right before pouring or into the traced soap. If you have soaped with these 3 different milks...you will see the diff. NOT wrong...in using either milks just soapers preference...and colors are diff..fresh milked unhomo unpast is more caramel colored...while homo/past is whiter and stays whiter. Reducing/preventing the gel in milk based soaps PREVENTS the saponification of the milk fats...which gives you a more luxurious bar in my opinion. I just think if you are going to add milk...why saponify all those luscious fats!! Some think the milk sugars are higher in fresh milk also...which could account for a darker color/reaction with the lye also. And technically...I think the good milk should be saved for the cheese!!

MOST milk sold in stores is BOTH past and homogenized. If it is not...they must put a warning on the label that they could be exposing themselves to harmful bacteria...which is BUNK as far as I'm concerned.
I know too much about milk!!

Never made powdered milk...I do know that you should avoid powdered milk...or at least make sure it is made in america. Chocolate manufacturer's have been avoiding it (well Hershey's and L.A. Burdick's Chocolates at least)...from a country I will not mention...NOT the USA though.

Cheaptrick, thanks for the milk lesson.... I think the next time I soap I'll add a bit of water to the lye and then add the milk to the oil/lye mixture and see what I come out with.... I do like the lighter colored bars since they seem to take colors better....

I did order some goats milk powder from TNS (which should be here today).... I wanted to add GM to my lotion that I got from TNS and I also ordered their liquid soap gel to see how that is... If I like the gel, I think I'll order up some Pot Hyd to make my own...

Anyone have a good liquid soap recipe??

I found Fels Nappa soap at the store now to find the A/H soap to make my own clothes soap.... Anyone use anything else to make clothes soap with??
