Soap Makers Help!

Well I'll have to try a bunch of different things here! Must calc in some veggie shortning instead of the palm to help with whiteness and go from milk-cubes. Shortning is easier to get than the palm anyway. It was closer to being slushy then frozen solid, but not as thin as a slurpy-drink ya know.
I also L-O-V-E those infused colors, beautiful work

so I am so excited I found yellow dock root at my local health food place (which is unusual for alaska to have anything I am looking for) so I was wondering could you PLEASE give me directions for making the infussed oils with the dock root.

I also got my order of EO and colorants I am SOOOOOO excited to play with them today!!!! but I have so many questions... when you use a color do you just "play" with it to see how much you need? there were no instructions on the bottles. so I cant refer to it....

I also got the EO's and they are so yummy smelling!!!

I found plam oil and palm kernel oils and castor oil and shea butter..... I am so excited to play with some of them. hopefully I will have some bars to send out SOON!!!! I feel so bad that I am holding up the swap.... but they WILL be there to send out before the due date just wont be ready to use when they mail out....

I found EO at the health food store to is there a difference in those and the ones I got from the soapmaking place other than size?

also I found liquid clorophyl at the health food store can I use that in the soaps as a color? I thought I saw that some one used that in their soaps!

thanks guys!

Congrats on all the new supplies!

Yellow dock root. Do you have a crock pot? I really don't measure, but if you have a cup of yellow dock root, use 2-3 cups Olive oil, You just need to make sure you use enough oil to completly cover the root. Cook on your lowest setting for 4 hours. I then transfer to a mason jar or whatever you want and let it sit for a week or two and then strain it after it has sat. then it's ready to use. My infused oil is usually so dark it looks almost black. You can't see through it.

As far as the colorant, they are all different. I have some liquid ones, I only use a few drops to color. Powdered pigments the levels vary depending how dark you want it. I would start at 1/8 teaspoon ppo and then go up or down from there. You can also e-mail the company you bought from, all that I have delt with are usually more than willing to help.

Eo's from the health food store, as long as they are 100% eo are the same as what you got, but I bet the prices are a lot higher at the HFS. Just make sure that if you do get any at the HFS that they are undiluted.

Liquid chlorophyll- I use it quite a bit and havn't had a problem with it as long as the bars stay out of the sun. If they stay in the sun for too long it turns brown. I use about 1 capful ppo. go up or down from there depending on the color you want.

Congrats on all the cool stuff! You must show pics after you use them

Cool, I can't wait to see what you do with it. Did you get the fractionated coconut oil or the herbal body spray?

I think I'll try the yellow dock too...I'll have to head out to the health food store and see if they have any.

IN my opinion and this is JUST commentary on my part...I am not wanting to incite a debate on knowledge or techniques....I also am VERY skeptical of essential oils which 'claim' to be the real thing...we as customers are not chemists and cannot test the eo's to prove they are not filled with carrier oils. If I'm going to spend a fortune on a eo...I am going to have it tested from a reputable chemist to make sure it is not filled with fillers. EO's should be CLEAR...and no color what so ever....with the exception of patchouli, german chamomile, and citrus. BUT even then...I'm VERY skeptical. Eo's are also extremely medicinal...more prone to triggering allergies...and depending on which ones you use and blend can induce high/low blood pressure or LABOR in pregnancy. EO's are also much more temperamental in cp soapmaking and fade quicker in my opinion and experience...I get mixed results with them and have frequently had them morph in smell to something not so pleasant. Technically...fragrance oils...can also have the same allergy effects, and usually color the soap. I would NOT purchase Eo's from a health food store...you are going to spend a small fortune. I would research a company online who states in their product description that this is an EO or FO that has been tested in cp soap method. It is guaranteed then and you will not be disappointed with a batch of MINERAL oil filled EO that seized your batch. Researching the company also helps...or call them as them LOTS of questions. IF they do not know...then I'd raise red flags. I PERSONALLY....only buy small small ml of eo's on special occassions. There are several companies who will sell or portion out their most expensive eo's for the small soaper.

True perfumers are 'protected' by copyright laws with their recipes...very top secret and trade marked.

I know I read the answer somewhere but I can't seem to locate it so I'll ask...

When you infuse herbs/roots/etc in EVO, do you use the amount of EVO infusion as part of the total oil count or as the super fat amount??

My BIL gave me a ton of powders/herbs/roots and I want to infuse them but wasn't sure how to account for the oil infusion....

Use it as the OO in your recipe. Let's say that your recipe uses 30 ounces of OO plus additional oils. If you have 14 ounces of infused oil that you want to use in your recipe, you'll need 16 ounces of OO that has not been infused. The actual percentage you use will depend on what you're trying to achieve. I only used the numbers as an example.
