Soap Makers Help!

I sounds like you experienced a false trace if the trace happened while pouring in the lye solution. Were you hand stirring? 10 minuntes isn't near long enough. If you were using a stick blender, then 10 minutes sound about right.

Would you post your exact recipe (amount of oils, lye and water) so we can double check it for you? What type of Olive Oil (OO) did you use? Some types trace faster than others.

If you have a layer of oil on top, I'd recommend letting it sit in the molds until that layer of oil is gone before unmolding.

I just used regular olive oil that is in a can at the food store that we use for cooking. I also used Crisco because I had it on hand.

Recipe was:
Water:6.08 ounces
Lye: 2.07 ounces
crisco: 11.2 ounces
olive oil: 4.8 ounces

I didn't add any fragrances or other additives yet- I want to be sure I know what I am doing

Which I probably don't.

Can I unmold what I have and try to re-batch it?

There are so many options, from making it yourself to buying a commercially prepared one. One of these days I'll own a "real" mold, but for the past year and a half, I've been using an old desk drawer that I line with a trash bag. Works great!

As for the round log molds, people have reported varied success with these. Although you'd get a line, I can't help but wonder if slicing it and banding it might be the easiest way to go. Or, you may want to consider silicone muffin pans.

I haven't ever used crisco, so I'm not sure how it acts when soaped, but your recipe looks ok as long as your scale is accurate.

How hot was your lye and oils?
Did you get pomace Olive oil?
Could you post a picture?

As long as you don't have a bunch of loose oil or worse lye, yes you could chop it up and rebatch it. Millersoaps has instructions on her site.

Can you get coconut oil from your grocery store? I would try adding that to your recipe at 25 % (take out some crisco) to add more bubbles.

I've used Crisco in my recipe and have never had problems with it. It's always the last oil to melt in the pan, so I would imagine that it's melting point is hotter than the 76 degree Coconut Oil that is also in the recipe.

Can you post a picture of your soap?

I can try to get a picture, but my computer is severely limited right now- I don't know if I can get the picture on line. The temperature was down to 105 or so for both the lye and the fats before I could get them mixed. (I was trying to make soap and someone else was trying to get the snow plow on in a blizzard and needed help and support.) The directions did say to mix at 110, so I figured it wasn't so far off, and both liquids were within a degree or two of each other. Now that I think of it, I don't know how you actually plan things so they are both at the same temp at the same time.

You'll be okay. Lye is good, water a little high (for me, but I discount ... not something for the beginner).

You DID weigh your ingredients with a good electronic or balance scale, n'est pas?

You have enough liquid in your recipe, that if you wanted to rebatch, you're good to go without any extra water.

Shred it up, place it in the crock pot on high until it starts to 'melt', then turn it to low and keep and eye and keep stirring until all the shreds are gone. Then slam it into molds.

It's a good recipe (although I 2nd Morgaine's suggestion of getting some coconut oil for some big bubbly lather!!)

Next to try ....
Crisco to 6.4 oz
Olive to 4.8 and
coconut to 4.8
2.2 oz lye and
5.1 - 6 oz water.
