Ok, I am going to start a new thread for the swap. I am thinking a Valentines Day one will be nice and give everyone time to plan and make their soaps. I want to give people enough time to order supplies and such and cure their soaps and I don't think we would be able to give enough time before Christmas.

You MUST post in the new thread to be part of the swap!!

I have a question about saturated vs. unsaturated fats ratio. Can someone help me understand why I have read that soap makers should aim for a 60:40 ratio? Most of the recipes I have done so far (from Watson's book) do not have that ratio. I know that the soaps will still work even if they don't have that ratio, but it's still confusing why that should be the 'recommended' ratio.

btw, I made a light purple soap today with some of my classic lavender fragrance oil. It smells great! but it traced fast.

I don't think it is mandatory to have the 60:40 ratio at all. It is just a nice guide line to making a balanced bar that will be hard, lather well and not too harsh. My own personal formula is not 60:40 but it is close.

Thank you for your help, Morgaine. I was letting that get to me and I'm trying to learn all I can about the different properties of soap.

CJ, glad you mentioned that because I am going to do a lavender soap soon, using BB FO though, but I'll be watching for a fast trace!

PS--What is "Watson's" book?
