Soap Makers Help!

Hey!! I used to represent that remark!!

13 years ago I couldn't make soap

Sure can now!!

We all have to start somewhere. Don't ever be afraid/ashamed/embarrassed to ask questions about making soap here. It is how we learn!

Melt and pour is probably where I'll start. Then I'll rebatch stuff. Or should it be rebatching then melt and pour? And I can get melt and pour from Michael's or a craft store or something? Too many Qs.

I'm bumping this up from the deep dark -- hopeing it doesn't get lost . For those looking for solid information about soaping , this is the thread you want !! You really must start from the very first page so you get all the information !!! Good luck ~~ Tammy

About two weeks ago I posted that my soap had curdled and oil was left on the top. I ended up rebatching by adding the oils that were standing on top back in. I used the exact same recipe and made another batch yesterday but instead of the fragrance oil I bought at Michaels craft store(labled Something Fabulous), I used pure essential oil and had no problems. Tonight I used the same recipe again and it curdled. I have come to the conclusion that the brand of fragrance oil I am using is causing my problems. I'm going to order some good stuff and see what happens. I guess I get to do another rebatch tomorrow

ETA: On a good note, my daughter and I made some really cute layered soaps. We used ridged silicone cupcake molds in the shape of hearts and poured white then added a drop of red and pouredlight pink then added some more red and poured dark pink. They hadn't been out of the mld for an hour and she sold one to my SS's friend for his girlfriend for Valentines Day.

bockbock: I think you found your problems! Check for EO/FO suppliers in GA & IL Kangaroo Blue is in IL. She doesn't have a whole lot of EO/FO, but what she has is good stuff. She's a soap maker herself and lists her results from CP soapmaking.

I think there may be a thread that lists good suppliers.

I get a lot of my EO from MMS, but mostly that is because I use a lot of their Shrink Wrap Bands for my soaps, so I order my EO/FO from them if I'm out of one or another when I need to order bands.

I will definately check them out. My B-Day was yesterday so this week I'm going to order myself a little present of some new oils. Or maybe a big present

Some of them do. Ours has absolutely 0 melt and pour, and is getting rid of their candle stuff too. I'm not interested in using it, but I once managed a Michaels, and enjoy wandering through the aisles when I do go for little things like magnets.

Made my first soap tonight!!!!!

I used a calculator online and measured everything out in ounces on my scale.

I made it with, 47.1% Olive Oil, 41.2% Coconut Oil and 11.8% Almond Oil. I really should have put more Essential oil in, according to the fragrance calculator, but I only ended up putting what I had in, which was a half ounce of Lemon EO. I read that citrus smells don't hold as well, so I may not smell it later.... but that's fine!

My only regret is not making more. I'm using a plastic dishpan as the mold and the soap is going to be thinner than I would have wanted.

I can't wait to cut it into bars late tomorrow (or the next day) I think I'll do a 6 week cure.

I had to keep reminding myself to be careful with the "batter." It smelled and looked just like a delicious lemon cake batter. It's easy to forget that it could give you a nasty burn.

I'm so excited! I can't wait to make more!
