SOB save our birds

I'm very very sorry but sometimes we have to sacrifice for the good of the whole. Whose birds would you like to get VND next?

That's enormously unfair. Kerri tested her birds. In fact, she called California state vet Annette Jones to say she was doing that. According to her, Jones relayed that nothing would happen until after the Easter Holiday.

She got the test results once her birds were gone. All were negative.

Wow. That is incredibly unempathetic. Because I don’t know you and your writing style, I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and tell myself I must have taken what you wrote the wrong way and being incredibly unsympathetic was not your intention.
This poor woman has been through
an incredibly traumatic experience and is actually trying to educate people on what she learns so others in her position in the future might benefit. She doesn’t HAVE to do that.
She needs kindness. And people to listen if they like, educate themselves and take action if they see fit.
This is really is about basic citizens rights, government transparency, the personal disappointment of trying to get elected officials to help, and what is defined as animal cruelty applied to livestock (poultry).
If people have an opinion that would be hurtful, that they should really keep to themselves, please just ignore this thread.

I'm so sooo sorry you and your children went through this horrific experience!! I'm just heartbroken for you... can't even begin to imagine what I would do in a situation like that but those people are heartless, tactless and evil. I didn't realize animal cruelty, abuse and torture were legal in California. Sick.

That's heart-wrenching and I'm crying just reading about what happened to you. I can't watch the video.

Look. I have read her story over and over and i think her version may not be the entire tale. It is a very emotional thing and I'm especially sorry she let her children witness it. But I have tremendous sympathy for everyone else in the quarantine zone who might lose their chickens at any time. And sympathy for people with chickens outside the quarantine zone who might be quarantied next. Until this severe, serious, airborne and widespread diseae is stopped all of our flocks are in danger. The entire meat chicken and egg industry is in danger. I am not unsympathetic. I have great sympathy for all of those who have sacrificed for the greater good and all those who stand to lose their flocks, livlihoods and hopes and dreams. Done.

It is NOT airborne (source: http://www.fao.org/3/y5162e/y5162e02.htm). It is spread via chicken-to-chicken contact, fomites (like clothes and equipment), and humans carrying/wearing/using such.

I haven't seen one documented case of VND introduced into a flock without humans being involved as a possible vector.

Plus, she was informed that neighbors nearby picked this up back in DECEMBER. If Kerri's chickens were infected, they would have been dead long before April 19. And she's posted the paperwork documenting that they were negative.

Thanks for the video!

I'll try to summarize your situation the way I understand it:

In December 2018, Kerri was informed by the state that a bird nearby had gotten Newcastle's. In April, CDFA reps showed up to test, but as they could not produce proper ID, Kerri turned them away. The week of the 13th, she was reassured by state vet Annette Jones that no action would be taken until Monday 4/22. However, on 4/19 (Good Friday), CDFA came to Kerri's door with Riverside County sheriffs and a warrant good through 4/22, then proceeded to kill her chickens and her kid's pet turkey in view of them using methods that did not seem humane, nor did it seem to her to follow due process.

Kerri, is this an accurate view of what has happened?

Yes that’s accurate. I do have supporting documents of it all.

This post is gone & profile gone.

My first objection is HOW they were dispatched. There is no reason whatsoever for them not doing it as quickly, and humanely as possible.

Secondly, when they were informed the birds had been tested, and the paperwork produced confirming the testing, and she was waiting on the results, that should have been honored. It serves no purpose killing healthy birds. It sounds like the politicians have tapped into a big source of money, and to keep it flowing in, they need to show a higher number of affected birds.

Thirdly, almost all birds are fed commercial feeds, bought at the local feed stores. While many things affecting poultry are airborne, almost all can also be carried in on shoes, clothing, hands, etc. Why are the feed stores not being regulated on better biosecurity? This is not something that affects only poultry. Any farmer having sick animals, that comes to buy feed is a contamination risk. The immediate area of their parking lots should be sprayed down with some type of disinfectant solution, at least on a weekly basis. Their inside flooring areas, counters, credit card machines, etc. should be routinely disinfected.

Euthanizing for the safety of all is NOT the question, here ... although it should be one of many. The issue here is due process and the methods used. And here's the real kicker, in my book - Under both medical and legal definitions, what they did to those children constitutes CHILD ABUSE! And it needs to be reported as such!
