Kerri, what you've experienced was traumatic. If you feel there was injustice I hope you'll get a lawyer and pursue your case. And I hope this virus is eradicated so we can all replace and renew our flocks as soon as possible.

In the meantime, what is it you want this community to do? We can't undo what happened. We can't advance your case or affect what a court will decide. What material assistance are you asking for?

We are all just trying to keep our birds uncontaminated and safe too.

So, how do you see us in this larger question? Because I don't see that ginning up fear and hysteria about an awful event is helpful to you or to anyone else. And I hope everyone will take a deep breath and not allow themselves to be distracted from the goals of keeping birds safe and eliminating the virus.

Meanwhile, I hope your family can get over your pain and heal. How can we help in that effort?

In short - is there something constructive we can do? Can we write letters to someone? Send e-mails? The best way to keep this from happening again is to educate the fools ... oops ... officials ... who are both ordering and carrying out this program. That would be something good to come out of this horrific experience.

I would be completely infuriated and heartbroken if this happened to me, this was completely mismanaged by the people in charge of the quarantine. Thank God I live in Alabama, where people kick back hard against overreaching government bureaucracies like this - that's all I got to say.

Euthanizing for the safety of all is NOT the question, here ... although it should be one of many. The issue here is due process and the methods used. And here's the real kicker, in my book - Under both medical and legal definitions, what they did to those children constitutes CHILD ABUSE! And it needs to be reported as such!

Your comment, the way it is stated, is rude, cruel, and uncalled for. Her birds had recently been tested. It turns out that they were healthy. Killing healthy birds does not in any way, shape, or form stop the spread of the disease. Had they tested positive, that's still no reason to be cruel with comments to others.

You're talking nonsense. The virus is never eliminated; it's carried in the wild avian population. All that this heavy-handed mass slaughter of non-infected birds does is make it look like bureaucrats are solving the problem.

Yes, what those kids experienced was awful. But we have no way of knowing how an environment of contention contributed to it. And the trauma and loss should and probably will be dealt with in courts and therapists' offices. That's a matter of a concluded event and ongoing resolution for individuals.

OTOH, euthanizing for the safety of all is VERY MUCH the question. As it stands those of us in the quarantine area are probably looking at months if not years before we can refresh our flocks and before we have any security for our existing flocks. Those in proximity to the quarantine areas will, I'm sure, look forward to similar relief that it won't extend into their areas. Due process will extend the period of contamination and probably allow the incidence rate of vND to increase and possibly spread.

I don't know how many people in this discussion are in the quarantine areas or even in CA -- or UT & AZ where there have been isolated cases. But for those of us who are and who are looking at the big picture for the time when this is over and we can have our healthy flocks in peace being part of the solution seems the best answer. And that may mean that if euthanasia comes to us, we may be better served doing it ourselves rather than objecting to methods after the fact. Short of that, I don't see that the discussion that centers on a single extreme case and emotional reactions from people not involved are useful.

I agree with this. I remember how tender I was as a kid and if police officers had showed up at any point in my childhood to shoot and kill my pets in front of me, it would have scarred me for life. As a kid I cared more about animals than I did about people (and still do tbh). I remember having a total wailing breakdown just over a few trees getting cut down in our yard when I was young because I empathized so strongly with them.

I don't even wanna think how I would have reacted to having my pet shot in front of me by "authorities".

Anyone who has this happen to them should video the process and make it available for all to see. This draconian approach was developed before officials could be shamed by virtually instant worldwide exposure of their misdeeds.

The State Vet is the one carrying out the depopulation. Our state vet is part of the CDFA (CA Dept of Food and Ag) you hear mentioned.
