SOB save our birds

Despite several posts by people on Facebook, CDFA states there is NO data saying this outbreak came from fighting roosters! Smuggled birds, yes. The only KNOWN transfer of the virus due to cockfighting was the Compton to Ventura spread. Two roosters were taken from Compton to a site in Santa Paula so that the CDFA didn’t kill his best fighters. Those two birds died quickly, and infected the others at the location. At that site, over 4,800 roosters were killed. Of all the positive tests, most have been backyard flocks, for eggs and pets. The term used on official documents, “Backyard Exhibition Birds” is a generic one, and does not denote cockfighting, and it is sometimes chosen by the property owner.

A site in Santa Paula, doesn't say what the site was BUT read between the lines...it was all roosters

I posted your source article but disagree with parts.

I've never heard of "backyard exhibition" referenced to anything other than 1) fighting birds or 2) ornamentals. I think it's clear to all that we're not really talking about Ayams or Silky hens. What we are talking about is the American Gamefowl Rooster, unrecognized as a showbreed (except in bantam). You're gonna want one of them bad boys for yourself, especially when you can get hundreds or thousands of dollars "exhibiting" it.

To be sure, there are people who aren't dirtbags who simply like this breed. Same with pit bulls. But given the data we have, again, having over 20 birds, having >50 roosters, having gamebirds are named risk factors.

I went on FB. From what I gather, a vet declared a chicken to have Virulent Newcastle Disease, which was cofirmed. More cases in that area developed, so the govt. set a perimeter, and all birds within that perimeter fell under mandatory euthanasia. The workers doing the euthanizing came with pump pellet guns. They pumped some of the chickens with pellets, not always killing them, or killing them on the first shot, or two. Then they began shoving LIVE, and dead birds into bags, breaking their legs first. There was NOTHING humane about the way the chickens were dispatched.

Due to the scare, in other areas, people taking sick chickens to the vet were reported. No testing was done to confirm the disease. When that person was reported, again, a perimeter was set up, so any neighboring flocks were to be destroyed too, Again, no testing to confirm the disease, and again no humane euthanasia.
I am terrified that something like that will happen in my area, because I am close to Los Angeles. If I ever fall under mandatory euthanasia, I would rather bring my chickens to my vet and have her euthanized them rather than them being brutalized and stuffed in cages or bags half alive!I think that is horrible what they did!

That is a good video, and shows that they are doing the job humanely. From what I've read, the gas method they're using, sounds the most humane, if they keep the gas levels up, which from what I was seeing, it appears they do.

The homeowner has a kill order for 1:30 p.m. today. Look at this video. What I see are absolutely the most normal people you'd find anywhere waiting patiently to express disapproval. It'd be a privilege if any of them lived next to me. Look at this video, because it's the good part of Americana that is going away.

As of 1:26, live streaming here

Hi Kerri, I had a notice to call to have my birds tested. Our birds are super healthy no new castle around us. Are really only coming to test?
