I hope it was not the kids but I found it was always easier to talk to me kids by telling them they were not in trouble but I needed to know what happened. When one of the fessed up, I did not punish them but talked to them and the importance of the actions and the results. Though it was never about a pet, more about broken or missing things, they seemed to feel better opening up about what they had done. Maybe explaining that you need to know in the event it was not an accident, you need to know if she was sick and could make others sick so you need the whole story and the truth.
