Sorry Ewesheep, I didn't mean to imply that every person who gets it never worked, simply that there are people who haven't worked that do get it. Uncle's worked since he was 16... paid in on every check... he's getting the runaround... but Sis who hasn't held a job more than a week (okay, maybe two) and done that only a handful of times in the last seven years... she gets rushed right through? System is screwy. But again, sorry if it sounded like I was knocking everyone who managed to navigate that system, I didn't mean that at all.
Actually, when my aunt was being investigated by CPS... living here and flat out refusing to even bother putting in applications... (whole 'nother rant)... anywho the CPS people were advising her to apply for SSD for both her boys... told them to claim that the elder had scholiosis (sp?) and the younger... was it ADD maybe? So she could get cash for their doctor's visits, travel expenses, etc... the fact that neither had those conditions, both were on Medicaid so if they did all treatment is covered, and she didn't have a car didn't seem to concern the agent at all. What the devil IS that? A government employee encouraging someone to commit fraud?
But that's not all... oh no, when Sis was applying (there's a topic about this actually) she told them that she'd lived with us for X time... I told her flat out that I wouldn't lie for her (just my luck I'd end up prosecuted and she'd get off scot free)... next thing I know SS agent is calling me, Sis gave her my number and told her I'd be happy to verify over the phone our income, our expenses and that Sis had lived here and paid X a month to us in rent... yada... that it was okay that I didn't fill out the form, that this was just verification, so no pesky paperwork needed... I told that woman flat out, She Did Not Live Here Ever... KK (her DD) lived here for five months over two years ago, but Sis never lived here, period. I am not going to lie, I am not going to commit fraud, by saying she did... then that agent when into this weird tone and started trying to talk me into going ahead and doing it anyways... KNOWING it was a lie... so what the heck is THAT?!? Finally got it through her head that I would not, verbally or in writing, commit fraud and she left me alone... later Sis got her benefits anyways... without written confirmation of address, pay, nothing... so... yeah, wee bit leery of a system that I've seen manipulated ... and that's manipulated others.
That system should be for folks who've paid in, who now can't work due to a disability, to still be able to live... but that's just not what it is anymore...
