Social Security Update, Important please read, and be NICE, Please!

I receive social security disability, NOT SSI. I worked long enough to earn my quarters.
I have a friend (ex co-worker) whose SO never worked over the table, so never earned his quarters. He gets SSI and his check is almost double mine. He has a "back injury", but it doesn't stop him from playing softball, playing frisbee with their dogs or driving to Oklahoma three times a week to buy booze.
Because he gets SSI and they are not married (they won't marry because he'd lose benefits), he also gets food stamps, medicaid and rental assistance. They live rent free in a mobile home owned by his sister, but sister signed a paper saying they rent.
We won't get a COLA increase for the next two years, but our medicare premiums will still go up. Every year they go up by about the same amount as our COLA increase.

His medicare premiums are paid by Medicaid (the state).
Friend's SO will still be doing fine, especially with her full-time job. I'll have to be slower than I am now about having the money to pay the 20% doctor and hospital bills that medicare doesn't cover.
To me, in a nutshell that's what's wrong with social security.

It's a shame that those that are very well capeable of helping out more don't. I can understand why people would want to be rich but the way I see it. We can't take it with us when we die unless it's put in our coffins or cremated with us. But that is just too selfish and stingy. I feel it is only necessary for a family to be able to pay their bills and be able to buy the necessaties in life which doesn't include mansions, plastic surgery and so on. If the wealth was shared we would ALL be doing fine even in the times we are in now.

With that said.

Those that are relying on benefits from the government or retirement to survive are barely making it now as it is. And alot of them aren't. We should be taking care of our elderly and truely disabled. I know there are people getting disability and shouldn't.
My daughter's boyfriend claims he can't read or write so he gets disabiity. But he can send and read text messages on his phone all day long. He's strong enough to pick up a horse but too lazy to work. While those that truely can't work have to live on peanuts.

There should be a sysstem that weeds out these people so those that really need it can benefit more.

Just my opinion and not trying to start a thread war either.

It's just not fair. I know what you mean. I have applied for disability myself because I can't even do simple chores like wash dishes without being in pain. While my daughters boyfriend hasn't worked enough to be able to claim disability is getting ssi because he claims he can't read or write which is a lie. And he doesn't pay child support and this children don't get a check either. He gets out of it scott free then does side jobs for extra cash to go partying. I'd like to give him a good shake every time I see him.
He's not the only person I know that cheats the government either. There are others.

I agree. My mother never worked outside the home, and drew off of my dad for 20 years before she died . . . but she lived off it, and never touched her little bit of savings she had, so she sure didn't live high on the hog, as they say. If a person is married to another person, then they should be able to draw off what the other person made, because my dad drew three checks and died . . .so there was all that money in there he had paid in, and who else should get it? I don't have a bit of problem with that situation; its the one who come here and don't do a darn thing and get all the free stuff. It isn't right, and its taking food out of deserving people.

Now that I agree with!!!!!

I also agree but it has to be cosidered those born disabled that will never be able to work. I'm sure this will bring up the subject of Pro Choice but it is in the individuals decision on what to do.

I am sorry you misunderstood my post. I am also sorry that someone tried to make it sound real. You are one of the many people in the US that are in a potentially very bad situation. I wish the best for you and hope that eventually the American people will do the morally right thing.

Children born with diabilities are people too. Look at Steven Hawking. He can't move, but he is one the most intelligent people alive. I believe the "don't do a darned thing" people are the ones that cheat the government or are here illegally.
