my kids were learning about socialism in school. The way the teacher(s) is/are explaining it seems real hokey, even for my 13 yo. (talking in candy pieces and sharing them...)
Coincidently my husband got the following e-mail which I decided to have my 13 yo read, which seemed to make it easier for her to get it....especially since it was school related.....
now my disclaimer, I do not know if this is true....I did not write it....just thought it was an interesting way to describe it......

An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had never flunked a
student before but had, once, failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said ok, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism.

All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A. After the first test the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. But, as the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too; so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around the average was an F.
The scores never increased as bickering, blame, name calling all
resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of
anyone else.
All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that
socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is
great, the effort to succeed is great; but when government takes all the reward away; no one will try or want to succeed.
Could not be any simpler than that....

What a great way of breaking it down to a simple way everyone can understand.

when there is no satisfaction gained from excellence, why bother to excel?

The idea that in America anyone can acheive anything if they try is the force that drove this country to its greatness. It is our backbone.

That's a very good analogy. Pure Socialism has never actually been tried and most likely would not work. Next time you hear how everything is going to Socialism that should help you understand it is a lie. There is such a thing as a Socialist Democracy and many countries do quite well with it. There is also no such thing as a pure Democracy.

This is a subject that is probably going to get us in trouble as we are not supposed to get into that here, however, it seems to be happening. Did you guys catch that bit about turning over some of the bank regulations to an international body? Scary. I dont want to bash one side of the political isle. I myself am on the right, however, my side has performed as bad as the left lately and that is saying a lot. Its time to take our country back from all of the current politicians. The wonderful thing about our country is that our forefathers made sure we could get it back from freaks like Bush and Obama. It needs to be done soon though, I think Obama is about to make an end run around our Constitution.

And, I defy anyone to show me where socialism has worked.

USA!
USA!
USA!
This is America. If you don't like it change it!
We have the right. Call your local, state and federal representatives.
Get involved and stay involved.
It's our country and no one elses unless the majority is not vocal to those who we elect to represent us.
If we are not vocal, then there is no one to blame except ourselves.

the Fire department and the Police are socialist entities, however. I'll definately not shoo the fire department away if my house is on fire, nor the police
