I'm talking about human socialization... with strangers and meeting them in strange situations.. etc..
Not about home situations...
All the stuff you described is what most people do with their pups at home. I get that..
But MY concern is human stranger socialization... and i think that between 8-16 weeks its VITAL to expose your dog to those "stranger" stiuations... which you CANT do if you cant bring the dog out of your yard until they are 13 weeks old...
Gah... confusing.
redhen, I suggest you call your local nursing homes and see what is required to bring your pup in there. I brought Addy there twice already. The nursing home I work at only requires proof of upto date vaccnations.
It was a great socialization experience! Different floor types than we have at home, people in wheelchairs, different odours, elevators, loud people that act and move differently(alzheimers ward), loud carts clanging through the hallway and much more.
Both times I have brought her have been short and sweet(not to overwhelm her). And filled with petting and treats for appropriate calm behaviour. I think a nursing home is very low risk. Besides all dogs requiring up to date vaccinations before being allowed entrance it is also cleaned and disinfected very frequently. ALll in all it was a great experience.
I bring Mabel(my bullmastiff) in their quite frequently. It truly enriches the lives of the people I care for. I think I may go a step further and get Addy certified as a therapy dog(if her temperment develops the way it should).
Anyways just thought I would pass on that info....
