Society finch missing back feathers

I recently got a society finch who had lived alone for an unknown period of time (the lady who sold him didn't know much, as it had been her daughter's bird and her daughter moved out).

I immediately noticed that his tail feathers were short and ratty-looking, which is common among birds without much space. When the bird perches close to the cage bars, this can sometimes happen.

However, a couple days later I realized that under his wings there are no feathers, or just a light dusting of down feathers. I have not seen him plucking himself. No other birds were with him.

My experience in the past says that mites don't stay just on the back (and/or tail).

The bird is now in a big cage with lots of fresh food and water. Surprisingly for a bird fed only seeds, he accepted spinach, apples, eggs, and crushed eggshells as soon as I put them in the cage.

I am going to try to post a picture. I may have to edit this or something, because I forgot how (ooops).

Any thoughts?
