I have an EE that lays green/blue, two marans that lay brown a Legbar that laid her first baby blue today and a 10mo old Legbar that lays olive eggs we brought in 6 days ago and has laid everyday since. Today one maran went in and laid, then then both legbars. However the egg my husband found in the coop was cracked open, yolk gone and double soft shells (will attach photos), however both legbars laid shortly later perfectly fine eggs as well as the other marans. We cannot figure out who laid this soft shelled egg because it's brown inside!! Any ideas!? Note the soft jelly looking shell was inside of the other shell.

My guess would be one that laid olive eggs. Stress could have caused her to release the shell less egg, and this time of year some hens will release more than one yolk at a time, most become double yolks, others become 2 eggs close together.

Thank you so very much!! Yes, both of our marans have been laying double Yolkers! It's quite fascinating! Thank you so much! I worry so easily!

Ok so now I had another one from my maran that laid at 11:00AM a perfect egg! Then a friend came over and I chased one around to pick her up to see if my friend who was interested and then shortly after my maran that laid this morning ran into the coop and laid this!

I believe that first one that happened before this was also the maran. She laid her first egg March 12th. She's a frequent layer but has laid 3 in one day and two double yokers. I think her ovaries may be over producing!?

If you chased her around it was more than likely what made her lay the egg before it was ready. The egg spends about 20 hours in the shell gland, any stress like that will cause soft eggs.
