I have two chickens now, both are laying. One lays perfect brown eggs, the other...eh. I have read that they might need calcium and oyster shell for soft eggs, so I have both that is mixed in with their food, and also a supplement that goes in the water to help. Still, three weeks later, I have only got 1 egg that wasn't soft, and that one the white part of the egg inside was gooey. She also will only lay the eggs in the middle of the night (about 3am). Any ideas or comments that could help??? :/

Can you tell us how old they are? What breed? Did you raise them from chicks or were they purchased all grown up? I keep my oyster shell separate from the feed so they can eat as much or as little as they need. They seem to instintively know how much they need. If the soft egg layer is very young it could be that's she's just growing into laying.

The one that is laying the good eggs is a R.I.R., the soft egg layer is a White Leghorn. They were both purchased as chicks, in early March, but the leghorn is actually a couple of weeks older than the R.I.R. Leghorn has been laying for about a few weeks, about 3 1/2. the R.I.R. Has only been laying a week, but all eggs were good. I will try putting some oyster shell in a separate feeder and maybe that will help. Thanks for the advise.

I have been trying the oyster shell now for a little over a week. Still soft egg shells. I will keep trying though. :/
